There were Western staff and they were able to confidently explain what was gluten free. Plus they had some delicious cocktails – which was great for my celebration with friends!

Order the salads and fresh lobster – you won’t be disappointed!

Eating in Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan is one of my favourite islands and I always find myself there – at least once a year. For the latest holiday, I stayed in Haad Yao at High Life Bungalow – which was a wonderful surprise since it was situated so high up on the hill overlooking the sea.

Now, this post is about looking for safe things to eat. So here goes:

As always, I tend to avoid Thai food as soy and fish sauce are used in a lot of dishes. It’s also quite difficult to tell if the kitchen washes their woks after cooking each dish. If someone speaks English, it is worth asking.

At Highlife, I stuck to the salads – sans sauce, and the jacket potatoes. My travel partner had the English Breakfast which looked good, but I wasn’t sure if the bacon was deep fried or if the sausage was gluten free. So I had some fried eggs and beans for breakfast.

In my luggage I packed some Heinz Beans snap pots – which always come in handy! Plus some gluten free cereal bars and crackers.

One night we met friends on Haad Salad and had a lovely fish BBQ dinner right on the beach in front of the Salad Buri Resort. We had grilled prawns, mackerel, barracuda with salad, corn and baked potatoes. I made sure to check out the grill and was shown that they used garlic and oil on their fish – no soy sauce in sight!

Another restaurant I found on this trip was Taboon. They had some great dips – however they were all served with pita bread so I had to request they bring it out separately. They also had some yummy salads. Taboon can be found around Chao Pao, near the lake.

Spaghetti with Avocado Sauce

avocado-pasta-700This is such a simple recipe – I’ve used it several times. It’s great when there’s an avocado special, since they  are a good source of pantothenic acid, dietary fiber, vitamin K, copper, folate, vitamin B6, potassium, vitamin E, and vitamin C. For more benefits, click here!

avocadoIngredients:

12 ounces gluten free spaghetti
2 avocados–halved, pitted and peeled
1 garlic clove, smashed
1 bunch scallions, roughly chopped
Juice of 1 lemon
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
½ cup chopped parsley, for garnish

Directions:
1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook until al dente, 6 to 8 minutes.
2. While the pasta cooks, make the sauce: In the bowl of a food processor, pulse the avocados, garlic, scallions, lemon juice and olive oil until smooth.
3. When the pasta is tender, reserve ½ cup of the cooking water, then drain the pasta. Add the reserved water to the avocado mixture and process until smooth.
4. Add the sauce to the pasta and toss to coat. Season with salt and pepper. To serve, portion the pasta onto plates and garnish with parsley.

Sloane’s #glutenfree #sausages

Friends of mine recently found this gluten free sausage in Ari Villa and picked it up for me. Apparently, Sloane’s does a few different types of gluten free sausages which are available in several grocery stores around Bangkok and for delivery from Passion Delivery and Paleo Robbie. I don’t know about you gluten free folk, but I can’t eat at my school’s canteen, or the soup stalls down the road. I usually spend Sundays cooking and preparing my lunches for the week, but I want my Sundays back!
